Barre Phillips

Barre PHILLIPS, born in San Francisco in 1934, has had a name as one of the forerunners of improvised music for more than thirty years now. His “Journal Violone” (Edition Opus One, London, 1968) was the first record of free improvisation on solo double bass in the history of jazz, whilst his work with John Surman and Stu Martin – The Trio – marked a turning point for jazz in Europe. He’s made some 150 records of which 30 are in his name. Barre has also worked as a composer in numerous artistic domains, especially that of contemporary dance (e.g. with C. Carlson) and the cinema (R. Kramer, J. Rivette, R. Copans…). Musicians he’s worked with include Coleman Hawkins, Eric Dolphy, Archie Shepp, Chick Corea, Benny Golson, George Russell, Lee Konitz, Charlie Mariano, Michel Portal, Albert Mangelsdorff, Jimmy Giuffre, Paul Bley, Don Ellis, Fred Frith, Evan Parker, Derek Bailey, Ornette Coleman, Joëlle Léandre, Cecil Taylor, Keiji Haino, Kazue Sawai ...
Since 1999 he works with two distinct trios: one with Joe and Mat Maneri, and the other with Urs Leimgruber and Jacques Demierre.
Finally, Barre Phillips has been leading workshops in improvised music and dance music since 1976.
