Joe McPhee is a composer, poet and multi-instrumentalist (playing saxophones, alto clarinet, trumpet and valve trombone). He was born on November 3,1939, in Miami, Florida, into a family rich in musical traditions. When Joe was 8, his father, an accomplished trumpeter, started him on that instrument. In 1968 he began learning the saxophone. Since then, his personal quest has been a musical search through improvisation, conceptual studies and composition, encompassing various aspects of acoustic and electronic music. This search has brought him worldwide acclaim and recognition.
In 1981, inspired by Dr. Edward de Bono’s concept of “Lateral Thinking”, McPhee adapted it as a process to help him realize his own work. The result is what he calls P0 MUSIC. Derived from words like possible, positive, poetry and hypothesis, the word P0 is used as a language indicator to provoke the extension or shift of a fixed set of ideas towards the discovery of new ones.
Today, the word MUSIC in association with the name Joe McPhee makes all other language indicators unnecessary.
