This is the sound of a vowel modified by a diaeresis. Pronounced [oom-la-ought], from German um « around, transformation » and Laut « sound ». It is also the name of three-piece created in 2005 by Emmanuel Scarpa.
Emmanuel Scarpa (drums), Fred Escoffier (bass keyboard and Nordlead), Fred Poncet (guitar) form this trio, “Umlaut“, first presented at Festival international de Jazz de Grenoble, and selected for the 2007 AFIJMA.
