Franco-Japanese musical trio, Yokohama Zen Rock fully illustrates the benefits of cultural exchange : founded in Lyon, antique capital of the Gauls, the band associates the talents of Yoko HIGASHI (vocals), Takeshi YOSHIMURA (guitar), and French SPAGG (bass/machines).
Strong with this emulation, Yokohama Zen rock defend a sonic and visual style claiming the definition of Japanese electro punk rock. The band, who had initially formed around a project by Yoko, finds its identity by combining the Yoko's experimental performance, Takeshi's pop-rock influence and SPAGG's electro-metal. The resulting alchemy, far from being messy, is thus enriched by the members' respective experiences. Yoko excels in classical vocals, Nô theatre, Butô dance, commedia del arte and aïkido and also has a solo experimental music project under name HamaYôko (Entr'acte Records, London). Takeshi, once guitarist in band Lab Life (Sony-music Japan), is ever since he came to France the singer/guitarist in Azian Z (Jarring Effects), and recently collaborated to an album by R-Zatz (released in Feb. 2008 by Jarring Effects). Finally, SPAGG, currently part of Le Peuple de l'Herbe (Pias), is a « regular » of the Lyon musical scene and played with Sale Défaite, Treponem Pal, No one is innocent and Spor. Fruit of a long lasting collaboration, the album of Yokohama Zen Rock was composed and perfected with time. As a result it offers today, between punk-rock and abstract electro a nice musical range forged by stage experience.
