Piste - for « point »-, Pirkko - a girl's name, 22 Pistepirkko is usually translanted as 22 Ladybirds. God knows why ! Born in Utajärvi, a village North of Finland in 1980, on the ashes of punk band Matti Mätä & SS, Finland's mostly acclaimed trio has always followed the motto « Do what you have to do, try to be open to new tendencies, be adventurous but stay dignified, write strong songs, happy or sad, real stories for real people ».
After dithering but highly creative beginnings - the minimalist Piano, rumpu o kukka (84), interpreted in Finn and The Kings of Hong Kong (87), which will launch them internationally - PK (vocals, guitars), Espe (drums) and Asko (bass, keyboards), finally find their way and their audience, ever growing thanks to unauthorized, unique and memorable performances. Often depicted as a clever cross between Dylan, The Ramones and Neil Young... the three Finnish have always followed one rule\\ their own. Hip hop, electro revolution or Cosmo pop (and notably the blues of African Ali Farka Toure) affect their vision of music, and our three friends dive into the culture of sampling and computer orchestrated music. Successively will be released the experimental Rumble, City la la land (94), the dark Eleven (98) and quasi electro pop Rally of love (01), produced by the eccentric Per Sunding (Eggstone). After a long 2002 tour, the band decide to pause and wonder about how to make the 22 Pistepirkko adventure go on. Clear answers to these questions won't take long to be found. 22 Pistepirkko is back in 2005 with Drops & kicks, a polychrome album, composed of rough pieces ("Door to door man"), shamanic ("Midnight owl"), impetuous ("Rat king", "Not so good at school"), but also solid pop songs ("Second thoughts", "I knew"). Twenty-two (pure chance ?) brilliant and honest songs, both exciting and honey to your ears.
